1. Sugar is the main cause of cavities.
A myth that is almost a fact. Cavities are caused by acid, which is produced by bacteria in your mouth, which are triggered by carbohydrates, of which sugar is one kind. So, sugar is but one of the reasons for cavities. Rice, potatoes and bread are carbs too.
2. Kids are a lot more likely to get cavities than adults.
A myth that used to be a fact. Decay in children has been has been decreasing for the last 20 years or so, thanks to sealants, fluoridated water and preventive care, not so readily available a generation ago. Now, senior people tend to suffer more cavities.
3. All cavities cause pain.
A big myth! Symptoms do not appear in mild tooth decay, but they do when it is more advanced and causes damage to the nerve. Once decay gets below enamel, it may go unnoticed until pain appears, and you may need a root canal for then.
4. Sensitivity in teeth means you have decay.
Total myth. Hypersensitive teeth, gum recession, cracked or broken tooth are all reasons for sensitivity, decay adding to them.
5. Cavities are the only reason for root canals.
Same as above. A damaged nerve inside a tooth is the reason for root canals. Cracks, fractures, even clenching and grinding can traumatize the tooth severely enough to need root canal therapy.
