QUESTION: Dr. Leticia Quezada, What should I look for visually when I start my breast self-exam?
– Alejandra González, Puerto Vallarta. –
Breast self-exams are very important for cancer early detection, and a visual examination is the first of several steps to do them correctly. While you are standing in front of a mirror with your hands on your hips, your breasts must look the same size, shape and normal color, with no visible distortion or swelling.
If you notice any puckering, bulging or dimpling on the surface or a nipple that has changed position or an inverted nipple, you must visit your doctor immediately. Your breasts must also be free of redness, rash or swelling.
Finally, raise your hands above your head and make the same visual examination.
Congratulations for doing this important preventive action.
