QUESTION: Dr. Barrero, what is Human Papilloma Virus?
– Josefina González, Guadalajara. –
HPV is a virus transmitted through genital contact (oral, vaginal or anal sex). In men it may affect the penis, scrotum and anus and in women the cervix, vagina, vulva and anus. It usually runs free of symptoms.
There are several sub-types of virus; some may produce warts and other injuries called dysplasia and even cervical cancer. In men it produces penis cancer.
HPV treatment varies for each patient according to the age and nutritional state, as well as to the HPV type and the location and kind of injury. Treatments range from watching to cryotherapy (freezing of injuries), electrocautery, diathermic conization or laser photo-vaporization.
Gynecology check ups are important as many of these injuries are only detectable through colposcopy.
